Many times in my life I’ve been hungry – when I’ve missed breakfast and it’s time for lunch or when supper time is nearing – but never have I know what it’s like to be truly hungry. Unfortunately, many in our community know that feeling all too well. More than 1,000 people with the 47441 zip code alone utilize the Linton Community Food Pantry each month. That’s a lot of folks depending upon the food pantry to feed not only themselves, but also their families.

To me, it’s heartbreaking to think there are families in our community going without food. As a community, we need to step up and do what we can to help.

The Linton Community Food Pantry is giving the community a chance to give back and help fill their shelves during the Linton Freedom Festival parade on July 4. The organization will have a parade float with red, white and blue grocery shelves with the goal of filling the shelves as the float travels the parade route. Non-perishable food items as well as monetary donations will be accepted. All donations are tax deductible.

While any items are appreciated, some of the most needed items are peanut butter, canned fruits, canned vegetables and boxed cereal.

The food pantry is operated by SON Ministries, a collaborative effort of eight Linton area churches, local businesses and many volunteers. It’s located at 440 Northeast E Street, next to St. Peter Catholic Church. The food pantry is open three days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.
